Industry-Leading
Environmental Practices
The environmental programs of CWM and its divisions have achieved ISO and best-in-class EPA recognition.
At the same time, these continually monitored practices to minimize waste in every area have resulted in operating efficiencies. Process water recycling, peak load power conservation through CWM’s own cogeneration plant, and waste materials recycling have lowered operating costs.
Production from Recycled Raw Materials. Chicago White Metal's basic function, of course, is the production of environmentally friendly, recyclable custom components. The alloys used by CWM are produced from recycled metal, created with far less energy than is required for virgin alloy. For example, 100% of our aluminum die castings are produced from post-consumer recycled aluminum.
CWM's Environmental Management Systems:
ISO Certified, Achievements Recognized by EPA
1st: ISO 14001 Certification. The company's Environmental Management System was the first in the die casting industry to become so certified. Each of its divisions have also been granted ISO 14001 Certification (more in column at right).
1st: Accepted into EPA's National Environmental Performance Track Program. CWM became the first North American custom die caster to receive environmental recognition from the EPA. Begining in 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency publicly recognized Chicago White Metal Casting as being among the nation's top environmental performers, the first of successive recognitions by the EPA— the only custom die caster having received such recognition (more in column, right).
1st: Named by EPA as a "Green Biz Leader" Company. In an EPA sponsored program, Chicago White Metal Casting has been named a "Green Biz Leader" Company, based on its continuing environmental performance.
CWM is also a member of the EPA's Sustainable Industries Partnership Program, a initiative to aid die casting industry companies in developing advanced environmental management systems, which, in turn, would enable them to achieve ISO 14001 registration. Chicago White Metal was asked by the EPA to act as a mentor facility in its industry, providing input regarding its most effective environmental activities and steps it has taken to ISO 14001 registration.
The long-term goal of this partnership program is to enable further strategies leading to significant reductions in pollution, waste, environmental and human health impacts, with a decrease in regulatory burdens. This initiative in other industries has already led to a better understanding and cooperation among industry, government at all levels, and among citizens in moving toward a cleaner environment and strengthened economy.
